What is the difference between crown molding and cove molding?
Crown molding has a complex spring-angle profile with a flat back and angled face, creating a dramatic transition between wall and ceiling. Cove molding is a simpler concave curve — lighter and more subtle. Crown molding suits formal rooms and taller ceilings; cove molding works well in kitchens, bathrooms, and spaces where a lighter touch is appropriate. We install both.
What size crown molding is right for my ceiling height?
For standard 8-foot ceilings, a 3.5–5-inch crown profile is appropriate. Larger profiles can look heavy on standard ceilings; smaller profiles can look undersized. For 9-foot ceilings, 5–6-inch profiles work well. For 10-foot and taller ceilings, 6-inch and larger profiles are appropriate. We review ceiling height during the estimate and recommend a profile size that suits your room.
What is the difference between coped and mitered joints?
A coped joint is cut to follow the profile of the adjoining molding piece. A mitered joint cuts both pieces at 45 degrees. Coped joints are more durable — they stay tight as wood expands and contracts seasonally. Mitered joints can open up over time, especially in older homes with walls that are not perfectly square. We cope all inside corners.
Can you match existing trim profiles in my home?
Yes. We measure existing profiles and source matching stock or have custom profiles milled so new trim blends seamlessly with what is already in your home. This is especially important in older homes where standard stock profiles may not match the original millwork.
Do you paint the trim after installation?
Yes. Painting all trim, molding, and casing to a clean, durable finish is part of our service. We handle the full project from installation through final coat. We use Benjamin Moore Advance for all painted trim — it levels to a smooth, hard finish that holds up well and resists chipping.
Can trim be stained instead of painted?
Staining is an option for solid wood trim in a natural species — oak, poplar, or pine. Most painted trim installations use primed MDF, which is designed for paint and does not accept stain. If you want a stained finish, we source solid wood material and adjust the scope accordingly. Stained trim is more common in craftsman-style homes and spaces with exposed wood floors.

Most cosmetic trim, molding, and finish carpentry projects do not require permits. Structural changes, egress changes, electrical or plumbing work, or major alterations may require permitting and are reviewed separately.
