CompletedElegant crown molding installed throughout main floor — Wellesley, MA

5-inch colonial crown profile with coped joints and painted finish.

About This Project

This Wellesley colonial had no crown molding on the main floor — a common omission in 1990s construction. We installed a 5-inch colonial crown profile in the living room, dining room, study, kitchen, and all hallways, with coped joints at all inside corners for a tight, professional fit.

What Made This Project Successful

Coped joints, not mitered

We cope all inside corners rather than mitering them. Coped joints stay tight as wood expands and contracts seasonally — mitered joints open up over time.

MDF for painted applications

For painted crown molding, we use primed MDF — it is dimensionally stable, takes paint beautifully, and does not expand and contract like solid wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coped and mitered joints?

A coped joint is cut to follow the profile of the adjoining molding. A mitered joint cuts both pieces at 45 degrees. Coped joints are more durable because they stay tight as the wood moves seasonally.

What size crown molding is appropriate for standard 8-foot ceilings?

For 8-foot ceilings, a 3.5–5-inch crown profile is appropriate. Larger profiles can look heavy on standard ceilings; smaller profiles can look undersized.
