Before
New white oak treads, wrought iron balusters, and box newel posts.
This Wellesley colonial had a dated oak staircase with turned wood balusters that the homeowner wanted to modernize. We replaced the treads with new white oak, painted the risers white, replaced all balusters with wrought iron, and installed new box newel posts at the top and bottom landings.
Replacing dated wood balusters with wrought iron is the single most impactful staircase update. The open, linear look of iron balusters modernizes a staircase immediately.
The combination of stained hardwood treads and painted white risers is the most popular staircase finish — it is classic, timeless, and works with any interior style.
In most cases, no. The structural stringers are typically in good condition and can remain in place. We replace only the visible components — treads, risers, balusters, and newel posts.
Iron balusters are attached with a metal shoe at the tread and a metal cap at the handrail. The installation is secure and does not require any structural modification.
